As of this writing, Maui has lost over 2,100 acres to wildfires. This disastrous event has impacted countless families, untold wildlife numbers, and infrastructure. The recovery will take years, thousands of hours of labor, and help from anyone who can. Now that we’re one organization, Northwest Community Credit Union and TwinStar Credit Union are working together to support Maui. From August 28 through September 15, 2023, we’re matching all donations to the TwinStar Community Foundation, up to $50,000.
We'll also match $.03 for every card transaction our members make until we reach $50,000 in donations. That way, members who can't donate can rest easy knowing they're supporting Maui through us. To be clear, we won't be charging members $.03; we'll be donating from our own assets based on member spending patterns. We’re doing this not just because we have family, members and team members who live in Hawai'i but also because we believe that communities should look out for one another.
Where Will the Donations Go?
Fifty percent of donations will go to the Maui Strong Fund, which is the Hawai'i Community Foundation. Twenty-five percent of the donations will also go to the CUAid foundation to help rebuild Maui Credit Unions destroyed by the fire and employees of said credit unions that have lost everything due to the disaster. And lastly, the remaining 25% of proceeds will also go to the Hawai'i State Department of Education to help support the West Maui School impacted by the fire, including rebuilding, teacher and student supplies, and general aid.
That means 100% of donations will go directly to those who need them. Our organization knows how difficult wildfires can be. We donate annually to the Red Cross for local regional disaster relief and support members as needed with special hardship loans. That's why we can't sit idly by as one of the most destructive disasters in recent history happens in a place that's not too far from home. There are few things, if any, more important to us at NWCU than the concept of community. We understand that a thriving community's power, impact, and purpose is to serve those within it. And now, more than ever, the community of Maui needs our help and your help.
