NORTHWEST COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION LAUNCHES COMMUNITY MAKEOVER PROGRAM TO BENEFIT KIDS UNLIMITED

Credit union’s second community makeover project addresses urgent need for homeless youth in Medford

MEDFORD, Ore.—Thanks to Northwest Community Credit Union (NWCU), Medford-area children will soon benefit from a major remodel at Kids Unlimited. The credit union has selected Kids Unlimited as the recipient of its 2006 Northwest Community Makeover project. The makeover project is based on the popular reality television show “Extreme Home Makeover,” but instead of remodeling a home, the credit union has selected Kids Unlimited, a non-profit organization in Medford that provides academic, sports and cultural enrichment programs for children ages six through 12.
The Northwest Community Makeover team, comprised of volunteers from NWCU and local area businesses, will remodel the kitchen at the Kids Unlimited Community Center, which is located in the former Medford Bowling Lanes facility in West Medford.

“The credit union and all of the partners in this project are making a tremendous investment in our community through the Northwest Community Makeover program,” said Kids Unlimited Executive Director Tom Cole. “We are excited to have been selected as the recipient of this generous donation and we can’t wait to get started.”
The City of Medford was recently identified as having the second highest youth homeless population in Oregon. The credit union chose the kitchen as its makeover project due to the impact the project will have on this particular segment of Medford’s underprivileged population. With its new kitchen space, Kids Unlimited will provide hot meals for hundreds of needy kids in Medford every day. The kitchen will also act as a culinary arts learning lab for students interested in pursuing a culinary career, and serve as a catering kitchen for events held at Kids Unlimited, providing kids with an opportunity to learn about catering.

“Northwest Community Credit Union is dedicated to giving back to the community in which its members live and work,” said Jan Griffin, manager of NWCU’s Medford branch. “We’re still in the planning phase of the project and we’re reaching out to the community for donations of time, labor and materials. We hope local businesses will help us make a difference in Medford and an investment in our future.”

In addition to the credit union, the Northwest Community Makeover team is being spearheaded by Medford-based architect David Wilkerson of OgdenRoemerWilkerson Architecture. Wilkerson will serve as architect and project manager for the project.

“OgdenRoemerWilkerson has a 35-year history in Southern Oregon with a demonstrated commitment to giving back to the community,” said Wilkerson. “I am so pleased to be a part of the makeover project at Kids Unlimited as it allows the firm to continue its relationship with Tom Cole and really make a difference in Medford.”

Local ABC affiliate KDRV-TV will be featuring the remodeling project on its evening news show. The entire project is anticipated to take three to four weeks during which KDRV will provide news coverage of various stages of the construction project.
