How to avoid unwanted direct mail and telemarketing
Responsible companies participate in a national organization that lets consumers
remove their names from most solictors' advertising lists. And, most honest
companies that deal in phone and direct mail advertising will likely participate with an
organization for marketers, called the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). In order to join
the DMA, a member company must agree not to contact the people who have notified DMA they
do not want to receive mail or phone advertising.
How to contact the Direct Marketing Association
If you want to opt out of much of the direct mail advertising that goes out to "current
residents," send your complete name and address to: DMA Mail Preference Service, PO Box
643, Carmel, NY 10512.
If you want to avoid many of the telemarketing calls that reach your home, send a letter
to DMA Telephone Preference Service, PO Box 1559, Carmel NY 10512. Include your full
name, your current address and phone number (including area code).
How to get on the do-not-call list
The National Do Not Call Registry allows you to choose whether or not you want to be
contacted by telemarketers. Click
here to access the online do-not-call list and sign up your home or cell phone for
free to avoid telemarketer calls for five years.
How to avoid pre-screened credit and insurance offers
One phone call can remove your name from any marketing that might involve the national
credit scoring bureaus. This lets you say "no"--in advance--to most loan offers, but
it also removes your name and address from many insurance offers. Simply call a
toll-free number, 888 5OPT OUT (888 567 8688), to avoid the pre-screened mailing lists that
filter through Experian, Innovis, TransUnion and Equifax.
When you call, you choose either to opt out for two years or on a permanent basis.
If you choose to permanently opt out, you will be mailed a Notice of Election to Opt
Out Permanently agreement form. Although your request takes effect within five
days of the notice, it may take several months before you start to see fewer solicitations.
Although we do not share your information with independent third parties, you are always
welcome to contact Northwest Community Credit Union
if you want your name removed from any promotional mailings we might send to members.
